Top of the pop’s target audience is uni sex but is mostly aimed at young girls as the genre is associated more with pop music featuring heartthrob boy bands.
The price and date is written at the bottom underneath the barcode it’s hard to see but then this way it can’t put the reader of buying it for example if they can’t see the date then they won’t know if it’s already been out a week or the price then they won’t worry about the price the main focus will be what’s on it and the content will determine the buy not the price.
This magazine uses a range of different fonts but focuses on san serif fonts making the whole magazine clearer to read. The main colour scheme is purple; pink and white which suggests it’s aimed more at girls as their feminine colours.

The mast head is really big and bold so it stands out, it’s written in pink and then it’s got a thick white outline on a purple background having the white outline around the words makes it stand out more. The masthead goes from left to right and it’s just a little lower than right up the top, this is so they can fit their publishers logo in which is the ‘BBC’ this is useful as some parents or even the target audience may see this logo and think they should defiantly by the magazine as they already know the logo and think its reliable, suitable and enjoyable.
Cheryl Cole is the main picture and she’s wearing white which makes her stand out just as much as the masthead with her wearing white we know that white represents importance we only see her head and shoulders as the rest of the magazine blends into her lower half. Cheryl’s head covers part of the masthead I don’t think this matter to much as you can still see the words ‘top of pops’ so it’s pretty obvious what the mast head is but for new readers then it could cause a no sale as they can’t see the mast head and read it properly.
This Top of the pop’s magazine front cover is divided into 3 main sections horizontally and vertically using the principle of thirds. The left hand side and right hand include other pictures of pop stars and their stories, in the middle is Cheryl because she is the main cover line and at the bottom in the middle is non related music things such as make up and shopping. The magazine does consist of an order although it does look busy and things do overlap this has the effect that the magazine is full of things to read about and well worth your money. The music cover lines are on the left and right with a picture and the non music relating things at the bottom every cover line has a picture this is useful as the reader doesn’t have to read the cover lines they can just look at the pictures to see what it is about.
The cover lines, include words like ‘exclusive’, ‘shocking’ and ‘you’ these all grab attention to the reader as they will like that their getting access into a secret or the unknown and draws them into buying it more. The primary optical area focuses on Cheryl and her smile also on her cover line which is ‘you can be Cheryl Cole’ her smile is big and white which draws the reader in as it looks friendly the cover line also draws readers in as it says ‘you’ meaning the reader can get involved in the magazine and make it more interesting and the reader can relate to the magazine.
The Route of the eye represents the where the readers eyes focus on and on this front cover it starts at Justin’s eyes> masthead> Cheryl’s eyes> Diana’s open mouth> threw Cheryl’s body> ‘heaven’ then threw Joe’s eyes. Eyes are important as we all look at a face first to see if we recognise them and the route of the eye runs through several eyes, Diana’s open mouth makes the reader wonder why she looks so shocked and draws you into read it.
There are smaller cover lines also backed in white, these smaller cover lines can also draw the reader into the magazine as it advertises other bands such as ’Justin’, ‘the wanted’ which if you know this band or artist and liked them would also entice you to buy the magazine.
